Biography:
Albis was born the last child of eight in the small farming town of Glimmerstone, located on the edge of Lanuthan territory. Due to its remote location and small size, Glimmerstone often had to contend with threats, both natural and magical in nature. As such, it boasted a rather formidable town guard, of which both his parents and three of his older siblings were loyal members.
Due to being the youngest and the busy nature of the family, Albis was often forgotten. Not due to any neglect on his parents' part, but simply because he was a quiet and shy boy who didn't like to engage with the outside world. He rarely raised a fuss, always did his chores, and preferred the company of his books to the often loud and boisterous friends his family kept.
This arrangement, being well fed and sheltered but otherwise overlooked, worked just fine for Albis. Not only did it give him time with his books, but it often meant that no one noticed when he happened to taken an item or two that might not have originally belonged to him.
Albis had a hunger for exploration and learning. His books told him of far off lands and daring adventures, and he wanted nothing more than to experience those wonders first hand. Albeit in a safer, more controlled environment than striking out on his own like the heroes in his stories.
He took his excitement from sneaking around town and "liberating" interesting items. Trinkets and baubles that he imagined to be magical artifacts and long lost relics. During one such recovery mission, Albis discovered a book left behind by a friend of his father's.
The tome spoke of a place called the Warren, a hidden sanctuary where dragons and their chosen companions forged lifelong bonds. The stories fascinated Albis, igniting a dream within him: to find the Warren and bond with a dragon himself.
As he grew older, Albis's curiosity turned into a deep-seated obsession. He spent hours studying ancient texts, practicing stealth and subterfuge, and perfecting his skills in secret, for to reach the Warren would require a true adventure. Exactly like his heroic tales. His parents, though concerned, could not dissuade him from his quest. They understood that his desire to bond with a dragon was not merely a whim but a calling.
At fifteen, Albis's obsession reached a tipping point. He planned to set out on his journey, but his parents were adamantly against it. They feared for his safety and worried about the dangerous path he was choosing. An argument ensued, and in a moment of frustration, Albis left home.
He took only what he could carry: a few personal belongings, a small collection of his treasures, and the tome that had started it all. He ventured out into the world, determined to prove to his parents that he was as strong, brave, and capable as the rest of his family.
Albis soon learned the reality of the world was far more frightening than anything his books had prepared him for. Within a fortnight, he'd encountered more monsters and run from more terrifying noises than he cared to remember. His food ran out quickly, and sleeping in the great outdoors was not nearly as exciting as he thought it might be. Tired, sore, scared, and hunger, Albis resigned himself to giving up his quest and heading home. That was until he noticed the dark shadow pass overhead.
Unbeknownst to him, the friend of his father who had left the book was a dragon rider himself, and had come to the town looking for more potential recruits. His parents had been discussing the possibility of sending Albis off to the Warren with this friend, but the argument had occurred before they could bring the offer up to him. In the aftermath, they had panicked and called on the friend to help them search for their wayward son.
The shadow, as it turned out, was the friend on his dragon searching the countryside for Albis. When the boy came tearing out of the forest, frantically waving his arms and begging for help, he'd landed and explained the whole situation to him.
Albis returned home, chastened and ashamed. He was sure that his parents would never let him out of their sights now, which put an end to his dreams. He was more than a little surprised when they offered to let him go to the Warren with their friend and his dragon. Delighted, relieved, and eternally grateful to his parents, Albis happily accepted, then spent the rest of the evening enjoying a bittersweet going away party with his family.
The next day, Albis left with the friend and his dragon, determined to once again prove himself to his family. Only this time, he'd do it right.
