Name: Rattle

Age: 12 years

Gender: male

Race: Harpenai

Height: 4'0"

Personality: Empathetic, religious, loyal. Rattle was given his spoken name due to his tendency to add random noises, such as clicks and rattles, to the ends of his sentences. He tends to be very quiet and withdrawn, leading others to label him as "spooky." Truthfully, he is just a quiet soul who doesn't like to cause a fuss. He is deeply religious, sworn to a path of peaceful resolution and soul-searching. His tendency to speak only when he has something of value to say has also earned him a reputation of being a wise sage. He is exceptionally skilled at keeping secrets.

Description: Black eyes, gray feathers, violet beak/limbs. Rattle's lustrous, dark gray feathers are accented with streaks of white-violet that give him a very striking appearance. He is a slight, slender creature with a very human-ish build. Though his hands and feet are tipped in violet talons, his skin is soft to the touch and his digits are more humanoid than avian. He prefers to dress in dark, muted colours to avoid drawing attention to himself.

Biography:

Raised among the monks of the Hidden Valley, Rattle doesn't know where he came from. The monks tell him an egg showed up on the doorstep one day, and out he came. As is their nature, they took him in as one of their own and raised him with their values of peace and serenity.

Rattle was bullied in his youth due to being so very different from the other children. His stutter and quiet nature didn't help. Though his friends did urge him to complain to the monks, Rattle believed it was his duty to deal with the bullying on his own, or else endure it in silence.

Thankfully, his friends didn't agree. One in particular, Bartam, took it upon himself to fight back whenever the bullies targeted Rattle. Following his lead, Rattle learned the ways of martial combat so as not to leave his friend alone against their enemies.

In the years that followed, Bartam and Rattle were essentially inseparable. The two did everything together, from sharing a sleeping chamber, to chores around the monastery. Bartam talked frequently of getting out of the Valley someday. He wanted to explore the world. Rattle vowed to go with him.

Bartam, being a few years older than Rattle, was often called away to assist the monks in some of the more difficult duties. One day, he was summoned to assist with a delivery request to a local town. This in itself was not unusual. Yet when Bartam didn't return that evening, Rattle grew alarmed.

For days, Rattle waited for Bartam and pestered the monks as to his whereabouts. Everyone refused to speak on the subject. Finally, frustration won out over patience, and Rattle packed up his meager belongings in the night. He had no idea which way to go or how to search for his friend, but he knew that he couldn't leave him alone in the world.

It took Rattle many months of wandering the mountainside, doubling back on his own trails when he came to a dead end, or else forging a path where none existed, but eventually he did manage to find the edge of the magical enchantment that separated the Valley from the outside world. Passing through it, he set out on his first foray into the world at large.

What turned up on the doorstep of Castle Drakmor a few months after that was a scrawny, bedraggled, and scarcely alive creature with gray feathers and the tattered remains of a monk's robe falling off his frame. A little bit of care and rest, and he was well enough to be introduced to the Warren at large. He thanked Silinarialaun, goddess of peace, for bringing him to such a fortuitous location. If anyone could help him find his friend, it would be the dragon riders. Now he just needed to find someone willing to stick with him a while.
