Name: Elfin (nee Io Su Wan)
Age: 18 years
Gender: female
Race: Barokian (Tris'Hathian)
Height: 5'2"
Personality: Elfin is inventive, curious, and a bit eccentric. Her mind is always buzzing with new ideas. She’s passionate about pushing boundaries and has a natural charm that makes her a joy to be around. However, her enthusiasm can sometimes border on reckless, and she’s known for diving headfirst into experiments without always considering the consequences. This has gotten her into trouble many, many times.
Description: Like most Barokians, Elfin is short and built slight. She has an oval face and wide, expressive black eyes. She styles her hair in a short crew cut on top with a long ponytail that hangs down between her shoulder blades. Elfin prefers to wear form fitted clothing, the better to avoid dragging on counter tops or catching in equipment.
Biography:
Elfin grew up in the town of Uryu on Barok. Her parents, renowned inventors, dedicated their lives to solving the issue where magic caused technology to malfunction and short out. This has long been a known issue of the intersection of magic and technology on Tris'Hath. Most Barokians simply accepted that no tech could last forever in the magic rich environment of their world. Elfin's parents refused.
Their lifelong goal was to find a way to harmonize the two forces, but despite decades of research, their efforts had yet to yield a solution. Elfin grew up surrounded by arcane theories and mechanical blueprints, with her home resembling a cluttered workshop filled with half-finished experiments and magical artifacts.
As a child, Elfin was captivated by her parents' work, often observing their experiments with wide-eyed wonder. One pivotal night, a major breakthrough seemed within reach. Her parents had successfully integrated a new magical component into a prototype device, but during the final test, an unexpected surge of magic caused a catastrophic failure. The explosion left the workshop in ruins and severely injured her parents. While they recovered physically, their spirits were crushed by the failure, and their work came to a standstill.
Determined to continue her parents' legacy, Elfin dedicated herself to the study of both magic and technology. She knew that to make progress, she needed to understand the problem from both perspectives. The best way to do that was to travel to the heart of magic itself.
Elfin applied herself to finding a new location for her studies. Magical towers were plentiful across the mainland, but none wanted to accept a magically bereft Barokian whose only interest was the dissection of their centuries old practices. There was potential in the Sudlanese warren of Sewyn, but there were already so many Barokians there that it had practically turned into an outpost of her homeland. No, she needed something saturated in magical energies, but still open to outsiders.
The day the dragon rider arrived from the Warren in response to her missive requesting a transfer, Elfin realized that the world outside Barok was far, far different than anything she could have imagined. She knew of dragons. Had even seen a few flying overhead. Yet when the beast came to land at her parents' doorstep and touched its mind to hers, she nearly fainted. This was magic. This was the true power of their world.
The dragon rider introduced himself as Rith. He was a tall man with skin the colour of oak and hair as dark as raven feathers. He too was magical. Especially when he smiled. The dragon, a rich brown colour with sparks of gold and red shot through his hide like a sunset over a desert, introduced himself as Awenturath.
Elfin's parting with her parents was short and bittersweet. She'd already prepared them for this day, having excitedly announced her acceptance to the Warren after they responded to her initial letter. Though that whole process took forever. How anyone could stand writing physical letters and sending them across land on foot was mind boggling.
After a tearful goodbye, she mounted up with Rith and held on for dear life as Awenturath took her away from everything she knew and everything that made sense in her world.
The Warren was a truly chaotic place. Full of strange people and strange animals and strange magics. But oh, the magic. The endless, sparkling font of magic that spilled out of every corner and trickled down every hall. Everyone seemed to be possessed of some kind of magic, even if they couldn't wield it like the "magic users" of the area. The world practically breathed magic over here. Elfin had no doubt that she would be able to complete the breakthrough her parents had started.
Or she would have, if that magically smiling man hadn't appeared again. Just showed up outside one of her classes one day with that bewitching smile. He'd said a lot of words that didn't make sense to Elfin. Something something bonding agent or something like that. She'd nodded along to be polite. Then he'd invited her to meet his boss. That was an odd request, but again, Elfin didn't want to be rude.
It wasn't until that boss, K'lter, had asked her what world she wanted to stand on, that Elfin began to suspect she'd agreed to something she hadn't meant to.
