Armistead is a rider's son. He was born and raised in the Warren and has known no kind of life that hasn't involved dragons. His parents unfortunately passed during the hydra war, leaving him to be raised by surrogate parents. They were also riders, and raised him with the expectation that he too would become a rider one day. There was just one problem with that design for his future; Armistead was terrified of heights.
